8 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route
Tanzania is home to the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro (5895 meters), which is also the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Despite its height, Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s most accessible high summits, with most climbers reaching Uhuru Peak with little more than a walking stick, proper clothing, and determination.
Ascend Kilimanjaro Lemosho (Shira) Route
8-day Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route trek is perhaps the least used initial ascent route on Kilimanjaro, partly because of its remote location and the difficult roads leading to the trailhead. Accessible only by 4-wheel drive vehicles, the road can be impassable during wet periods. Starting at a relatively high elevation, we begin slow and easy on this route. Buffalo and elephant sightings are possible on the first day trekking through the forest, and the trail is often overgrown due to lack of use.
The Lemosho (Shira) route is the longest distance to trek up Kilimanjaro, so fitness plays a crucial role in the enjoyment and success of this trek. The route takes 6 days/5 nights or 7 days/6 nights on the mountain. The many changes of scenery and the spectacular hike across the Shira Plateau make this trek truly special. There are no huts on this route; the accommodation is in mountain tents.
Day 0: Arrive at Airport
Upon arrival, you will be picked up from the airport and transferred to Moshi town for an overnight stay at the hotel. You will meet your guide, who will brief you and check your equipment to ensure you have all necessary climbing gear. Any missing gear can be rented on this day. You will also receive information about the next day’s hike and final checks on your climbing gear.
Day 1: Londrossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
- Distance: 4.8 km / 3 mi
- Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
- Habitat: Rainforest
- Elevation: 2389m/7838ft to 2785m/9137ft
Departing from Moshi, a 3-hour drive will take you through welcoming mountainside villages to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. After getting permits, enjoy the beautiful rainforest scenery and winding trails. At lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and slippery, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
After breakfast, drive to the Lemosho route on the western side of Kilimanjaro. Registration of clients, porters, and guides will take place at the Londorosi Gate. After lunch, transfer to Moramu Point and start walking through shrub and giant heather to Shira 1 Camp.
- Distance: 4 km
- Hiking Time: 1-2 hours
- Elevation: 2785m/9137ft to 3610m/11840ft
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp via Cathedral Point
Explore the Shira Plateau with a gentle walk east toward Kibo’s glaciated peak, crossing the plateau to Shira 2 Camp. Visit Shira Cathedral for acclimatization with clear views of Mount Meru if weather permits.
- Distance: 7 km
- Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
- Elevation: 3610m/11840ft to 3850m/12630ft
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp
Continue east up a ridge, heading southeast towards the Lava Tower, and then descend to Barranco Camp. This day helps with acclimatization, keeping you at the same elevation as you started.
- Distance: 3 km
- Hiking Time: 2-3 hours
- Elevation: 3850m/12630ft to 3976m/13044ft
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Cross desolate scree slopes with no vegetation. The steep walk becomes more challenging due to altitude. From the top of Barranco Wall, cross a series of hills and valleys, then descend into Karanga Valley before a steep climb to Karanga Camp.
- Distance: 5 km
- Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
- Elevation: 3976m/13044ft to 3995m/13106ft
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, continue to the junction connecting with Mweka Trail, then proceed to Barafu Hut. Complete the Southern Circuit, offering excellent views of the mountain from different angles. Prepare for the summit attempt at midnight.
- Distance: 4 km
- Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
- Elevation: 3995m/13106ft to 4640m/15223ft
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then down to Mweka Camp
Start at midnight, climbing steeply to the summit glaciers. Arrive at Stella Point as the sun rises, then proceed to Uhuru Peak. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Barafu Camp for breakfast and lunch before heading to Mweka Camp.
- Distance: 5 km ascent, 12 km descent
- Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent, 4-6 hours descent
- Elevation: 4640m/15223ft to 5895m/19341ft (ascent), then 4640m/15223ft to 3100m/10170ft (descent)

Our Reviews
EXCELLENT Based on 64 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor Victor GVerified Amazing Safari Experience We went on a 5 day safari with Nature Excursions and Castor in April 2026. We had an amazing time and saw all the wildlife we could have hoped for. Castor was very hospitable and cared for us very well and made sure we had everything we could need during the safari, such as water, fanta/coke, food and a child seat for our 5-year-old son who also truly enjoyed the safari adventure. Castor had put together a tour that included Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti and Ndutu. This was a perfect mixture with close up elephant encounters in Tarangire, lions, rhinoceros, zebras, wildebeest and more in Ngorongoro Crater, and giraffe, leopards and cheetahs in Serengeti and Ndutu. Castor had arranged accommodation in hotels and in tented camps which was a good mixture of adventure and clean and comfy relaxation. We can highly recommend doing your safari with Castor, he is very professional and experienced, went out of his way to find animals and accommodate all our needs. He is very open and friendly and also helped us find what we needed in Arusha after the Safari.Posted on Tripadvisor J. GrayVerified 5 day safari We've been on several safaris in multiple African countries, but we returned to Tanzania and once again, to Nature Excursion Safaris, because of the abundance of wildlife and the tremendous guide skills of Castor! He did not disappoint! The itinerary that he planned, which included Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti and Ndutu, along with his amazing ability to locate the most elusive of wildlife exceeded my high expectations! Thanks Castor, for an amazing adventure! Merci beaucoup.Posted on Tripadvisor Nat PVerified Highly recommend! Castor was very kind and accomodating to our last minute change in itinerary. Due to airline issues, we had to push our start date by 2 weeks and Castor rearranged our itinerary and experienced no issues. He also customized the tours based on our requests. The car is comfortable and standard other safari cars we saw on our tour. The car was equipped with a fridge and well stocked with water, coke, fanta and juice. Castor also methodically arranged our meals to accommodate our allergies, two of the chefs made a dish specifically for us. He goes the extra mile to make us feel comfortable and at ease. We saw many animals during our safari days and Castor kindly points them out to us. He can also spot animals that are very far and well hidden, I don't know how he spots them while driving at the same time. In our other tours in Zanzibar the guides kept pushing for us to buy additional tours/packages despite us saying no and we felt that had to keep our guards up and it took away from the Zanzibar experience a little. Castor did not do that at all and we felt at least during our whole tour.Posted on Tripadvisor palexmailVerified Exceeded expectations and made the trip unforgettable Castor’s service during the 7-day safari through the Masai Mara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro was outstanding. The vehicle was comfortable, always clean, and stocked with fresh water. The itinerary was very well organized, with an excellent selection of lodges and camps. Castor showed deep knowledge of wildlife, explaining each sighting clearly and enthusiastically. He impressed us with his ability to spot animals from great distances and his constant attention to our well-being. His dedication and professionalism made the entire experience truly unforgettable.Posted on Tripadvisor Qing1028Verified 6-day, 5-night Tanzania+Kenya safari with Castor We booked a 6-day, 5-night hotel safari with Castor from Nature Excursion Safaris, and overall, our experience was mostly very positive. What impressed us most about Castor and his service were: 1. Castor is very nice, honest, and reliable. All arrangements were made via online chat, and everything promised was exactly delivered — no bluffing or excuses. What we agreed on was what we actually got. 2. The vehicle provided was in excellent condition. It had a distinctive green exterior and was well-maintained inside with amenities such as tissues, a trash bin, and charging ports. During the entire 5 days in Tanzania, the car had no mechanical issues. 3. We chose a mid-to-upper range hotel safari package. Compared to other agencies offering similar itineraries and accommodations, Castor’s price was more affordable — about $2400 USD per person, which made the trip very good value. However, on the last day in Kenya, Castor handed us over to a local Kenya guide, and unfortunately, that part of the safari was very disappointing. The vehicle was old and lacked basic comforts such as water, a fridge, binoculars, or even a trash bin — it felt more like an empty taxi than a proper safari vehicle. More seriously, about 40 minutes after leaving the border on the C103 road, the Kenya guide’s car broke down, and we were stranded on the road for over an hour. During this time, the driver left without explanation to find help and disappeared, leaving the four of us alone with three Maasai strangers without prior notice. This made us feel quite anxious and unsafe. While we highly recommend Castor and Nature Excursion Safaris for the Tanzania portion of the trip, potential travelers should be aware of the Kenya side’s arrangements and communicate clearly with Castor regarding who will be guiding and the quality of vehicles provided.Posted on Tripadvisor Angeles GVerified Gran safari con guia en español Hemos tenido una gran experiencia en nuestro safari de tres días por el Ngorongoro, Serengeti y Oldubay.
