4-Day Mount Meru Climbing Itinerary
This 4-day climbing itinerary for Mount Meru is designed to provide a gradual ascent, allowing you to enjoy the scenic beauty of the mountain while minimizing the risk of altitude sickness.
Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut (2,514 meters)
Your adventure begins at Momella Gate, where you will meet your guide and porters. After completing the necessary park formalities, you’ll begin your trek through the savannah and tropical rainforest zones. Along the way, you’ll pass through diverse vegetation, with the possibility of spotting giraffes, buffaloes, and a variety of birds.
The trek on Day 1 is relatively easy and offers a gentle introduction to Mount Meru’s landscape. After about 4-5 hours of hiking, you will reach Miriakamba Hut at an elevation of 2,514 meters. This will be your first overnight stop. The hut provides basic accommodations, and it’s a great place to rest and enjoy the surrounding views.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3,500 meters)
On Day 2, your trek continues through the moorland zone, where the landscape becomes more barren and rugged. The trail ascends steadily, offering fantastic views of the Ngurdoto Crater and the surrounding valleys. You may also begin to notice the cooling temperatures as you gain elevation.
The hike to Saddle Hut (3,500 meters) takes approximately 4-5 hours. The Saddle Hut is situated between the summit and Miriakamba Hut, offering spectacular views of the mountain’s peak and the alpine desert. This is where you will spend the night before making your summit attempt the following day.

After spending time at the summit, you’ll begin your descent back to Saddle Hut for a short rest, followed by a further descent to Miriakamba Hut for your second night.
Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate
On the final day of your 4-day trek, you’ll descend back through the rainforest and savannah to reach Momella Gate, completing the trek. The descent usually takes around 3-4 hours and is a bit easier than the ascent, allowing you time to reflect on the adventure.
